How to Play Online Blackjack

Blackjack is the most popular casino banking game in the world.  Just like roulette, it is also one of the simplest casino games for beginners.  The history of blackjack itself dates back to the game of “21”, which itself draws Spanish roots from as far back as the 17th century.

In recent, Blackjack and online blackjack have become massively popular.  The hit 2008 blackjack film “21”, featuring Kevin Spacey, has also contributed to Blackjack’s growth and the number of advantage players trying to take advantage of the game.

Rules of Blackjack

Blackjack is a fairly straightforward game.  A dealer faces between five and nine playing positions on a semicircular table.  After all of the players make their bets in the betting box, the dealer will deal 2 cards face up to each player.  He will than deal one card face up and one “hole card” face down to himself.

The objective of the game is to get closer to 21 than the dealer, but not go over 21 or the game is over (otherwise known as busting/breaking).

Your aim is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over.  All cards take face value, Aces can be worth either 1 or 11.  You will be asked to hit or stay with your face cards.  Hitting means that you are dealt another card, and you can do this as many times as you want until you are happy with your total.

Bear in mind that the dealer/casino, who deals to himself after all of the players have finished, will keep hitting up to the value of 17 at which point it will always stay.  For example, if the dealer is dealt 10-8 than he will stay at 18

The normal payouts for blackjack are 1:1.  However, if you achieve Classic Backjack (a face card and an Ace) than you will immediately win 3:2 on your wager.  If the dealer also has Classic Blackjack than your bet will be “pushed” and rolled over to the next game.

How to Play Blackjack Online

When you open up a new game of blackjack online you will first need to wager some chips. You can normally click on your chips value (£1, £2, £5, £10) and than put them in the betting box.

After clicking Start, the game will begin and your cards will be dealt to you.

In addition to the standard rules of hitting and staying, you can also have the option to double down, splits and insurance.

  • Double Down – A player can double his wager and is dealt one additional card face up.  The player can only receive one addition card.  You can only double down after the initial first two cards are dealt or if you split.
  • Splits – If a player is dealt a pair on his first two cards than he can split the hand into two hands.  The two hands are than played independently.  During a split, Classic Blackjack is not possible and is just considered a regular 21.  In this case, a dealers Classic Blackjack wins and a 21 becomes a push.
  • Insurance – If the dealer shows an Ace (before upturning his hole card) than the player has the option of making an “Insurance Bet”. This equals half of the original bet and ensures that the player will not lose his initial wager should the dealer be concealing a 10 or face card under their Ace.  If the dealer’s hole card is equal to 10, the player wins the insurance bet at odds of 2:1.If the dealer’s hold card is less than 10, you lose the insurance bet and the game carries on as normal.
